Our immune system weakens as we get older.

Our Immune system is a constantly active system for maintaining physical health and protection against illness and germs. The immune system consists of collaborating organs, tissues, cells, proteins and other important substances in the body.

For instance white blood cells, which are an essential part of the immune system and function as our 'army' and attack and destroy harmful bacteria and viruses. As are our lymph nodes; these are small glands that filter and destroy germs so they cannot go to other areas of the body.

Also think of the skin and the mucous membranes of the respiratory tract, the digestive system, urinary tract and reproductive system. The skin and mucous membranes are our primary barrier against harmful influences.

Furthermore the stomach plays an important part because gastric acid kills bacteria as they enter the stomach. In addition, an enormous amount of 'good' bacteria reside in our bowels which neutralise 'bad' bacteria.

Next we also have the tonsils and adenoids, located in our throat and nasal passages that are part of our immune system. Just as the bone marrow is an important part and produces red blood cells, plasma cells, white blood cells and other immune cells from stem cells. The spleen stores the white blood cells and filters the blood.

As a result of aging our immune system starts to weaken. We become more susceptible for infections including respiratory infections such as influenza, bronchitis or pneumonia, but also urinary tract infections and food infection.

Our body becomes more accessible for harmful organisms and germs that can make us ill. Skin aging is one of the causes, making the skin barrier deteriorate. Also gastric acid decreases as we age and our cough- and gag reflex become less effective. Furthermore, we heal slower after illness and wound healing slows down also. In addition, when we age we tend to gain weight. Being overweight or having obesity can compromise the immune system.

The deterioration of our immune system also depends on our lifestyle. A healthy and varied diet is very important, as well as limiting your alcohol intake and quitting smoking. Equally important is getting enough exercise, get a good nights' rest and limit the amount of stress in your life.
